WhatsApp is starting to let people message a business without ever handing over their phone number. They do it with a username instead.

That sounds like a headache for anyone running a business, because a lead who won't share a number is a lead you could easily lose. The good news: your account already handles this. It was built in ahead of the rollout, so you're covered from day one.

What actually landed

When someone who has turned on a WhatsApp username messages your business for the very first time, your account creates a contact from their username and a unique ID WhatsApp assigns them for your business specifically.

So even without their phone number, the conversation and the lead are still yours. Nothing slips past.

The best part is that there's nothing for you to switch on. This is already working in the background.

What doesn't change

This is the part worth relaxing about. Almost everything stays exactly as it is.

• Phone-number messaging works as before. Every conversation where you have the customer's number behaves just like it does today.
• Your imports are untouched. Importing contacts by phone number works the same way it always has.
• Your existing contacts are safe. Their records, their conversation history, and your running automations all stay intact. No migration, no disruption.

The only difference is this: on a first-time message from someone using a username, you won't see their phone number. Your account captures them another way, so the lead is still there for you.

Replying to a username lead

Once someone messages you first, you can reply and keep the conversation going, following the same WhatsApp rules that apply to every other chat.

One honest limit to know: you can't start a brand-new conversation with someone you only know by a username. A username is a display label, not an address, and WhatsApp doesn't let you look people up by it. You can only message these leads after they've reached out to you first.

A few things people ask

Will I still get phone numbers? Often, yes. If you already have a relationship with the customer, or they're in your contact book, WhatsApp keeps sharing their number. The number is only withheld for a brand-new customer using a username who contacts you for the first time.

The identifier your account uses instead stays stable, even if the customer later changes their username. So your history and automations stay reliable.

Does this affect billing, templates, or automations? No. Nothing changes there.

Where it's rolling out

WhatsApp is releasing usernames gradually, region by region. The first markets include Algeria, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Libya, Nepal, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Singapore, Malaysia and Peru, with more to follow.
