Thinkific Alternatives for Coaches and Solopreneurs

June 08, 20268 min read

Thinkific is a well-built course platform. It’s been around since 2012, it’s publicly traded, and it does what it says on the tin: lets you create and sell online courses without needing a developer.

So why are you looking for alternatives?

Probably one of three reasons. The Basic plan doesn’t include the features you actually need - no certificates, no payment plans, no memberships - and the upgrade cost is harder to justify. The 10,000-student cap on all standard plans is a ceiling you can see from here. Or you’ve realised that Thinkific handles the course but not the rest of your business - and you’re paying for three or four other tools to fill the gaps.

If any of that sounds right, this guide covers your main options: what each platform does well, who it was built for, and where it falls short for a solopreneur or coach building a lean online business.

What Thinkific Does Well - and Where It Falls Short

Thinkific’s strengths are real. The course builder is clean and straightforward. There are 0% transaction fees on all paid plans. The student experience is polished. For a volume course creator who wants a dedicated course hosting platform and doesn’t need marketing tools built in, it’s a solid choice.

The limitations that matter to the ESC Hub reader are more specific.

The Basic plan at $36/month annually looks like a reasonable entry point - until you see what it excludes. No certificates. No assignments. No payment plans. No memberships. No Zoom integration. The features most coaches need to run a professional programme are locked behind the Start plan at $74/month annually or higher.

The 10,000-student hard cap on all standard plans is a real constraint for anyone building scale. It’s not a soft limit - you have to contact sales and move to enterprise pricing to go beyond it.

The free plan is gone. Thinkific removed it in 2025, replacing it with a 14-day trial. If you were counting on a free starting point, that option no longer exists.

And then there’s the bigger question: Thinkific is a course platform, not a business platform. It doesn’t replace your email marketing, your CRM, your booking system, or your landing pages. For a solopreneur running a coaching business, you’re still looking at a stack of disconnected tools alongside it.

If CRM is one of the gaps you’re trying to fill, the guide to the best CRM for coaches covers what to look for.

Teachable - For Creators Who Want Simplicity

Teachable is the most direct Thinkific comparison. Both are course-focused platforms at similar price points, both have removed their free plans, and both do course hosting well.

Teachable’s 2026 pricing: Starter at $39/month ($29 annually) with a 7.5% transaction fee, Builder at $89/month ($69 annually) with 0% fees, Growth at $189/month ($139 annually).

The 7.5% transaction fee on the Starter plan is steep. If you’re making $2,000/month in course sales, that’s $150 walking out the door on top of your subscription. The Builder plan at $69/month annually removes the fee, but that’s the actual entry point for anyone selling meaningfully.

Teachable does include a mobile app, built-in community features, quizzes, and certificates across all plans - a more complete set of basics than Thinkific’s Basic tier. Support quality and the platform’s ease of use get generally positive reviews.

The limitation is the same as Thinkific: it’s a course platform. Email marketing, CRM, funnels, and booking are not part of it. You’re still building a separate stack alongside it.

Best for: Course creators who want a clean, straightforward platform and are happy managing their marketing tools separately.

Kajabi - The Premium All-in-One Option

Kajabi is the most complete platform on this list. It genuinely covers courses, community, email marketing, funnels, landing pages, and basic CRM in one place - which is a real advantage over Thinkific and Teachable.

Kajabi’s 2026 pricing: Basic at $179/month ($143 annually), Growth at $249/month ($199 annually), Pro at $499/month ($399 annually). There is no free plan - 14-day trial only.

Worth knowing: Kajabi raised its prices in January 2026, and the backlash in creator communities was immediate and widespread. Creators who had been on the platform for years saw their bills increase without warning. Some reported paying hundreds more annually for features they weren’t using just to keep access to branding removal, which requires the Growth plan.

The feature-gating escalation at Kajabi is a real pattern - one that mirrors what Thinkific users experience, just at a higher price point.

Kajabi’s Basic plan at $143/month also caps you at 2,500 contacts and 5 products - limits that feel tight for a growing coaching business.

For the full comparison of Kajabi’s pricing versus what it actually delivers, that’s covered in depth in the Kajabi pricing breakdown.

Best for: Established course creators and coaches who want a premium all-in-one setup and can justify the cost. Not the right starting point for a solopreneur who is still building their audience.

Podia - For Simplicity and Affordability

Podia is the most approachable platform on this list in terms of price and ease of setup. Two plans: Mover at $39/month ($33 annually) with a 5% transaction fee, or Shaker at $89/month ($75 annually) with 0% fees. 30-day free trial on both.

Podia covers courses, coaching, webinars, downloads, community, and basic email marketing in one place - a more complete set than Thinkific at a lower price point. The platform is genuinely easier to set up than most alternatives, and the interface is clean.

The limitations: Podia’s email marketing is basic and won’t replace a dedicated tool for anyone running sequences beyond a simple welcome series. The platform has limited design customisation - what you see is largely what you get. Advanced automations and affiliate marketing require the Shaker plan.

The free plan removal in late 2024 also drew criticism from existing users, with some describing the jump from the old free tier to $39/month as a significant change.

Best for: Creators who want a simple, affordable setup and are comfortable with basic marketing tools. Not the right fit for coaches who need advanced CRM, complex automations, or a fully connected business system.

Mighty Networks - For Community-First Coaches

Mighty Networks was built around community first, courses second. If the heart of your coaching business is an engaged community rather than a linear course, it’s worth considering.

Pricing: Community plan at $49/month ($41 annually) with a 3% transaction fee. Business plan at $219/month ($179 annually) with a 2% fee. 14-day trial available.

The community features are genuinely strong - member engagement, spaces, events, and native mobile apps are better developed here than on most course platforms. The AI Cohost feature on all plans is a useful addition.

The limitations for coaches are clear: the Community plan has no course creation. You need the Business plan at $179/month annually to add courses properly. Transaction fees stack on top of subscription costs on every plan.

And like everything else on this list, Mighty Networks doesn’t cover email marketing, CRM, or funnels - you’re still adding tools.

Best for: Coaches whose primary product is the community itself - group programmes, mastermind groups, membership communities. Not the right fit if courses are your core offer or if you need a connected business system.

ESC Hub - Built for Solopreneurs and Coaches Who Need Everything Connected

The platforms above all solve the course hosting question. What they don’t solve is the broader problem: a solopreneur running a coaching business needs more than a course platform. They need the course alongside email marketing, CRM, booking, funnels, landing pages, automations, and a community - and they need all of those things to work together without manual connections between them.

ESC Hub was built specifically for that. It replaces up to 20 separate tools - not just the course platform, but the email marketing tool, the CRM, the booking system, the landing page builder, and the community platform - in one place.

At $97 a month, that typically costs less than Thinkific plus email marketing plus a CRM plus a booking tool combined.

When someone downloads your lead magnet, books a call, or joins your course, the follow-up sequence triggers automatically. No Zapier. No manual exports. No separate logins for every function.

The support difference matters in practice too. ESC Hub includes daily coaching calls and a team that helps you get set up and keeps things running - not a help centre and a ticket queue. For a solopreneur with no IT support, that’s a meaningful distinction. For a full breakdown of what all-in-one software actually covers in practice, that’s in the guide to all-in-one software for small businesses.

If you’re currently paying for Thinkific plus email marketing plus a CRM plus a booking tool, ESC Hub replaces all of it - typically at a lower combined cost and with significantly less complexity.

Best for: Solopreneurs and coaches who want their course, community, email marketing, CRM, and automations in one connected system - with a real support team behind it.

The right Thinkific alternative depends entirely on what problem you’re actually trying to solve. If you just need a better course platform, Teachable or Podia are straightforward options. If you need the whole business system to work together, the answer is a different category of platform entirely.

If you want to see what a connected system looks like before committing to a build - the trial is free for 14 days.
