How it picks a number

When you miss a call, here's the order your account works through:

1. The number they originally called, as long as it can send SMS
2. A number you've already messaged this contact from successfully before
3. Your default outbound number
4. Any other eligible messaging number in your account

This matters most when calls come in through number pools, call tracking numbers, or unverified toll free numbers - the kinds of numbers that often can't send texts. Rather than attempting a text that's doomed to fail, your account grabs one that works without any fuss.

What your customers will notice

Almost always, nothing. They call, they miss you, they get your follow up text just as expected.

Once in a while, the text might arrive from a slightly different number than the one they rang. That's on purpose. It's the system choosing a number that can actually deliver the message rather than letting an important follow up fall flat.

What this means for you

You don't have to do anything. There's no setting to flip and no numbers to juggle. If you already have Missed Call Text Back switched on in your Phone System settings, this just works from now on.

• More missed callers actually receive your follow up
• You stay aligned with messaging requirements like A2P and toll free verification
• You respond to potential leads sooner, even on the calls you couldn't take

A few things worth knowing

• Answered calls behave exactly as before and won't trigger a text back.
• If Missed Call Text Back is turned off in your settings, no message is sent.
• Your contacts' communication preferences and DND settings are still respected.
• If there's genuinely no eligible number available, you'll see the failed attempt in the conversation along with the reason, so you always know what happened.

Nothing to set up, nothing to remember. Your next missed caller just has a better chance of hearing back from you.
