Tidy Up Your Dropdown and Checkbox Options in Custom Objects and Companies
You set up a dropdown field months ago, added a few options, and now half of them are out of date or plain wrong. Until now, if that field lived in a Custom Object or a Company, you were stuck with them.
That's fixed. You can now delete options from Dropdown, Multi-select, Radio, and Checkbox fields in both Custom Objects and Companies - the same thing you could already do for Contact and Opportunity fields.
What you get
Three useful things landed here:
- Delete options you've never used, permanently.
- Remove options that are in use from future selection, without touching the records that already have them.
- See exactly how many records use an option before you delete it, so there are no surprises.
And the parts you rely on keep working. Your existing filters, Smart Lists, and workflows carry on as normal.
What happens to records already using an option
This is the bit that matters most. If an option is already sitting on some records and you remove it, those records keep the value. The option just disappears from the list of things you can pick going forward.
So your history stays intact. New records, filters, and workflow conditions simply won't offer that old option anymore.
How to use it
- Go to Settings, then Custom Fields.
- Open a Custom Object or Company field.
- Delete the option you want gone.
- If it's already in use, review the affected-record count that shows up.
- Confirm the deletion.
That's the whole job.
A couple of things to keep in mind
- Used options stay visible on the records that already have them.
- Deleted options can't be picked for new records, filters, or workflow conditions.
- Contact and Opportunity fields already worked this way - now your Custom Objects and Companies match.
If you've got a field cluttered with options you've been meaning to clean up, now's a good time. It takes about a minute and nothing behind the scenes breaks.
